About the research
‘Memorials and remains of medical research in Africa: an anthropology of scientific landscapes, ruins and artefacts’ (jointly funded by the UK ESRC and its sister organisations in France and The Netherlands), studies how medical research generates memory, is memorialized and materialized in countries formerly ruled by French (Senegal), German (Cameroon), and British (Tanzania) colonial authorities. The project seeks to excavate the political and material history of these field laboratories, detail the affective resonance they have generated in those who worked and continue to work in them, and describe how memory and amnesia are woven into the social texture of their everyday life.
